CNAME lookup

Enter a domain or subdomain to see where its CNAME record points, step by step.

Free, no signup. Up to 10 checks per hour.

How CNAME records work

A CNAME (canonical name) record makes one hostname an alias of another. Resolvers follow it and return the records of the target instead.

Following the chain

A CNAME can point to another CNAME, and so on, until a name with real records is reached. This tool shows each step and the IP addresses at the end.

Every step adds a lookup. Keep chains short, and make sure the last name in the chain exists.

Custom tracking domains

Cold email tools rewrite links and add an open pixel, which by default use the tool's shared domain. A custom tracking domain, such as track.yourdomain.com, is a CNAME to the tool's tracking host, so links carry your own domain instead.

Oppora works the same way: you add one CNAME at your DNS provider, then verify it in the app.

Rules and common mistakes

A name with a CNAME cannot hold any other record, and the root of a domain cannot have one at all. Use a subdomain, or your DNS provider's CNAME flattening or ALIAS record.

A frequent typo is entering the full name, track.acme.com, in a DNS panel that adds the domain itself, which creates track.acme.com.acme.com. Most panels only want track.

CNAME Lookup FAQ

What is a CNAME lookup?

A CNAME lookup checks whether a hostname is an alias of another one and shows where it points. This tool follows the chain to the end and lists the IP addresses it reaches.

Can I add a CNAME to my root domain?

No. The DNS standard does not allow a CNAME at a zone apex like acme.com, because that name must hold NS and SOA records. Many DNS providers offer CNAME flattening or ALIAS records to work around it.

Why does my CNAME not show up?

The record may still be propagating, may sit on a different name than you think, or your DNS provider may be hiding it. With Cloudflare's proxy turned on, public lookups return Cloudflare IP addresses instead of the CNAME.

How do I set up a custom tracking domain?

Pick a subdomain such as track.yourdomain.com and create a CNAME pointing to the host your email tool gives you. Wait for it to resolve, check it here, then verify it in the tool.

What is a dangling CNAME?

A CNAME whose target no longer exists, often left behind after you stop using a service. Delete it, because on some platforms another customer could claim the target and serve content on your subdomain.
