How an email finder works

Most companies give every employee an address in the same format. An email finder works out which format a company uses and checks it with the company's mail server.

From a name to an address

The finder builds the likely addresses for a name, such as jane.cooper@, jane@ and jcooper@, at the domain you enter.

It then asks the company's mail server which of them exists, the same way a verifier does, without sending an email.

Valid or risky

A valid result means the mail server confirmed the mailbox, so the address is ready to use.

A risky result usually comes from a catch-all domain, where the server accepts every address. The finder returns the most likely format, but no tool can confirm it, so send to it with more care.

When nothing comes back

Check the spelling and use the name the person goes by at work. Someone listed as Robert may use bob@.

Make sure the domain is the one the company uses for email. After a rebrand or acquisition it can differ from the website.

Email Finder FAQ

How do I find someone's work email address?

Enter their first name, last name and company domain above. The finder tests the common address formats against the company's mail server and returns the one that exists, with a valid or risky status.

Is this email finder free?

Yes. You can run one search per hour without signing up. A free Oppora account includes 50 data credits a month for more searches, and a search only uses credits when it returns an email.

What does a risky email result mean?

The company's mail server accepts mail for any address, or did not answer clearly, so the mailbox cannot be confirmed. The address follows the most likely format and often works, but some bounce.

Why can't the finder find an email?

The person may have left the company, may use an unusual format, or the company's mail server may block checks. The finder returns only addresses it has checked with the mail server, so it shows no result rather than an unchecked guess.

Is it legal to email someone I found this way?

It depends on where you and the recipient are. In the US, CAN-SPAM allows cold business email if you use honest headers and subject lines, include a postal address and honor opt-outs. In the EU and UK, data protection and ePrivacy rules set stricter conditions, so check the rules for your market.

Can I find emails for a whole list of people?

Yes, in Oppora. Add people to a list and find their emails in one run. Oppora tries its own finder first and then other sources, including ones you connect with your own API keys, and charges only when an email is found.
