Enter an email address to check whether it is valid, risky or invalid before you hit send.

Free, no signup. One check per hour.

How email verification works

An email verifier asks the recipient's mail server whether a mailbox exists, then hangs up before any message is sent.

Three checks, no email sent

First the address is checked for a valid format. Then the domain's MX records are looked up to find its mail server.

Finally the verifier opens a connection to that server and names the address as a recipient. The server's reply shows whether the mailbox exists, and the connection closes before a message is delivered.

Reading the result

Valid means the server confirmed the mailbox. Invalid means it rejected the address or the domain has no mail server.

Risky covers catch-all domains, which accept every address, and unclear replies. Unknown means the server gave no usable answer, often because it was slow or limits checks.

Keeping bounces down

Remove invalid addresses before you send. Mail providers treat a high bounce rate as a sign of a poorly kept list, and that can push your other emails to spam.

Send to risky addresses in small batches, and verify again before reusing an old list, since people change jobs and mailboxes get closed.

Email Verifier FAQ

How do I check if an email address is valid?

Enter it in the verifier above. It checks the format, finds the domain's mail server and asks that server whether the mailbox exists, then shows valid, risky, invalid or unknown.

Does verifying an email send a message to the person?

No. The verifier ends the conversation with the mail server before any message is sent, so the person receives nothing and does not know the address was checked.

What does a risky or catch-all result mean?

The server accepts mail for any address on the domain, or answered unclearly, so the mailbox cannot be confirmed. Many catch-all addresses work, but some bounce. Send to them in small numbers and only when you trust the source.

Why does the verifier return unknown?

The mail server did not confirm or reject the address in time. Common causes are slow servers, greylisting (a server that asks senders to retry later) and providers that block verification checks. Trying again later sometimes gives a clear answer.

How accurate is email verification?

Valid and invalid results come from the recipient's own mail server, so they reflect the mailbox at the moment of the check. No verifier can confirm addresses on catch-all domains, and a valid address can stop working when someone leaves a company.

Can I verify a whole list of emails?

Yes, in Oppora. Upload or build a list and verify every address in bulk; each standard check uses 1 data credit, and the free plan includes 50 data credits a month. Emails that Oppora finds for you are verified as part of the search.
